Exxaro pioneers innovative, sustainable development at the 2022 Mining Indaba.
Based on this year’s theme, ‘Evolution of African Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, ESG, and the Economies’, Exxaro representatives championed innovative, sustainable development at the indaba on 9-13 May 2022 at the Cape Town International Conference Centre.
Leading up to the event, Mzila Mthenjane, Exxaro’s Executive Head of Stakeholder Affairs, said: “We are committed to sustainable development for our stakeholders. This is why our presence at the Mining Indaba will mean productive discussions about the innovative and evolutionary ways mining can accelerate energy transition.”
As South Africa’s largest black-empowered resources and renewable energy solutions company, Exxaro believes that its stakeholders have an integral role to play in evolving the mining industry’s business practices to align with the Sustainable Development Goals for the betterment of our economy and communities.
Several Exxaro delegates contributed to this year’s theme and conversations.
Dr Nombasa Tsengwa, CEO: Designate, spoke on the challenges and opportunities for bulk commodities in the African mining sector, and on how climate change pledges affect mining. Kgabi Masia, Managing Director: Minerals, discussed developing Africa’s mining sector, with Roland Tatnall, Managing Director: Energy, presenting on sustainable mining. Elaine Hattingh, Manager: Innovation Planning and Execution, shared insights on open innovation’s role in digital acceleration in mining. Mohloana Magwai, Manager: New Business Development, Minerals, contributed to the subject of challenges and opportunites faced by young people in mining, and Mzimasi Tshikila, Group Manager: Supply Chain Management, covered infrastructure and supply chains in a digital era.
