The mining sector has been exposed to numerous crises in various forms. From social unrest to earthquakes and disease outbreaks, the possibilities are endless. It is, therefore, important for mining companies to be disciplined when it comes to managing a crisis - as failure to properly execute an appropriate strategy can be dangerous and puts workers’ lives at risk. As one of the first sectors to be given the green light to operate at 50% capacity during our most recent crisis, the spotlight was on the mining industry to see how we managed to operate and mitigate the effects of the virus. In honour of Mandela Day this past weekend, black-empowered mining leader Exxaro, continued its unwavering commitment to supporting South African youth in need. One of the company’s core operations, Exxaro Coal Central (ECC), pulled out all the stops to ensure that the needs of our future leaders at Bonani Primary School and Lethithemba Drop-In Centre were catered for. ECC, in partnership with their mining contractors Stefanutti Stocks and Kwena Mining Project donated kitchen appliances, a kitchen container and dignity packs to the school in Kriel. The mine ensured that the drop-in centre’s roof was replaced from asbestosis to a corrugated iron roof, while the pupils were equally treated to a few dignity packs.

As South Africa celebrated Youth Month on 16 June – 44 years since the historical uprising against an oppressive learning regime – we recognise young women making a tangible impact in the mining industry. Women like, Cebisile Majola, a 29-year-old Environmental Practitioner at Exxaro Coal Central. “Straight after completing my BSc degree (Life and Environmental Sciences with specialisation in Environmental Management and Geology), I applied for a geology trainee programme at Total Coal South Africa and soon after entering the room, I realised I was being interviewed for a positionin Environmental Management. Exxaro and the Small Business Institute (“SBI”) today announced a collaboration to promote the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa. This achievement is equivalent to two years of zero mineworker LTIs. After months of home-schooling and e-learning, South African learners in their final years of primary and high school, have finally been given the go-ahead to return to class as the COVID-19 lockdown is eased. On Monday 8 June, most public and independent schools across the country reopened with grade 7 and 12 students being the first group to be phased in. Another cluster of grades is set to return to school on 6 July with the final pupils filtering in on 3 August. With this in mind, a group of six Exxaro employees came together to donate 200 masks to Emasangweni Primary School in Mamelodi. Handmade with care, these protective masks were given to grade 7 learners and teachers at the school to limit the spread of COVID-19.
