EXXARO ENRICHES THE LIVES OF YOUNG STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN THE SEKHUKHUNE DISTRICT

With most students still unable to attend school after months of no or limited learning, education has been one of the most hard-hit sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mining innovator and South Africa’s leading resources company, Exxaro, has responded to this dire situation with a drive to empower young minds through school donations. The mining group recently donated R500 000 to Magukubjane Senior Secondary School, based in Magukubjane Village in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo. The school was severely damaged by a storm in 2015 and left with dilapidated buildings. Former Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Zokwana approached Exxaro in 2018 for funding on behalf of the school.

EXXARO COLLABORATES WITH TRADE UNIONS TO CURB COVID-19 STIGMA

“Viruses don’t discriminate, people do.” A powerful HIV-related slogan that reminds us that we are all at risk of contracting COVID-19, regardless of our gender, race, age, abilities, or social standing. Yet, we still tend to stigmatise those affected by the virus, labelling them as being ‘high-risk’, ‘infected’ or ‘victims’. This us versus them mentality segregates families, communities, and countries, undermining all efforts to prevent and treat COVID-19. Exxaro recognises the importance of standing against stigma to unite and protect all South Africans. As such, the forward-thinking mining group has partnered with various trade unions on an anti-stigma communications campaign to support employees who have been affected by the virus.

LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS LOOK FORWARD TO MOVING INTO THEIR NEW HOMES AS EXXARO’S LEEUWPAN MINE RESETTLEMENT PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

Exxaro’s Leeuwpan Lifex project located in Delmas, Mpumalanga, is a strategic project that was undertaken to help the mining company achieve its sustainability goals. The R500 million extension project is expected to increase the life of mine by 10 years and provide an additional 4.7 million tonnes a year of mining capacity. Statistically recorded, in times of crisis violence against women and girls increases, which explains the heightened rates of reported violence in the past few months in South Africa and around the world. According to the United Nations Population Fund, every three months of lockdown around the world during the global pandemic may have resulted in 15 million more cases of domestic violence than would typically be expected. In South Africa, one in three women experience domestic violence, and the rate of femicide (the killing of a woman by her intimate partner) is five times higher than the global average. COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS TACKLE SOCIAL COMMUNITY ISSUES IN MOGALAKWENA

Impact Catalyst is an exciting new initiative consisting of partnerships between Anglo American, Exxaro, the CSIR, World Vision and Zutari who all share a vision of creating enhanced social impact in the mining communities in Limpopo and will expand to other provinces. Their aim is to establish inclusive, collaborative, cross-sectoral platforms, initiatives and partnerships to achieve systemic socio-economic impact through public-private partnerships. One of the first Impact Catalyst initiatives concerns Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC). Covid-19 testing hits 100 mark at exxaro’s private labs

Proactive management of employee health and safety has been elevated to a new normal due to COVID-19. In South Africa, as previously suspected, the national COVID-19 testing capacity in both the public and private sector has come under severe strain as the pandemic progresses across the country. In response, Exxaro has invested in opportunities to increase the private testing capacity by setting-up two (2) COVID-19 PCR testing laboratories, one at Grootegeluk Mine’s Marapong occupational health facility in Lephalale, Limpopo; and the other at Matla Coal Mine’s occupational health centre in Kriel, Mpumalanga. EMPOWERING WOMEN TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE BEYOND 2020

In the wake of the global pandemic, a murky ‘shadow pandemic’ has emerged from which no country is immune. Violence and abuse against women and girls have been intensified by security, health and financial concerns, and compounded by the lockdown measures in many countries. President Cyril Ramaphosa faced the ugly truth when he stated, “As a country, we find ourselves in the midst of not one, but two, devastating pandemics. Although very different in their nature and cause, they can both be overcome – if we work together, if we each take personal responsibility for our action and if we each take care of each other.” As the number of Covid-19 infections rises in South Africa, the impact on women is becoming more obvious.

However, for us to live up to this ideal – we have placed greater focus on investments that go beyond the traditional CSI model. As part of our future plans to continue powering possibility and to showcase our support of the country’s land redistribution policy, Exxaro has embarked on a minerals succession programme that maps the potential agri-economies in our communities. In 2019, for example, our land management goals for 2026 included transferring 90% of post-mining land to emerging farmers in local communities while creating strategic partnerships with farmers to advance these agri-economies.

EXXARO RESILIENT AMIDST TOUGH TRADING CONDITIONS

13 August 2020: Exxaro Resources Limited (Exxaro) – the black empowered diversified resources group - reported positively resilient results for the six-month period ended 30 June 2020, a notable achievement in the face of global trade tensions, a challenging local economy and a decline in thermal coal pricing. Headwinds were compounded by the impact of COVID-19 during the period. Consolidated group revenue was up 18%, mainly due to 15% increase in coal revenue and the addition of clean energy revenue relating to Cennergi, contributing 100% from 1 April 2020. The coal revenue increase is attributable to higher volumes to Eskom as well as record export volumes. Core HEPS increased by 11% to 1 339 cents per share. While gender inequality in the workplace continues to be of concern in South Africa (and the rest of the world), businesses like Exxaro have been looking for ways to bridge the gap. In a male-dominated industry like mining, women have proven themselves to be just as competent and valuable - despite the industry-related stigma and stereotypes. At Exxaro, we know that giving more women a seat at the table is key to facilitating growth and innovation within the business. This has further encouraged the management team to find ways to bridge this gap and empower women to promote a more diverse and inclusive mining sector. I’m proud to say that Exxaro has been involved with some incredibly impactful initiatives targeted at empowering women.
