The restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown have taken a toll on all economic sectors in South Africa, and have presented additional hurdles for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). A survey undertaken by the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) on the readiness of South African small enterprises to respond to Covid-19 implications in March 2020, revealed that 86% did not know where to go to access emergency funding, 87% were unable run their business from home and 87% were unable to support themselves or their families during the lockdown. These findings are in line with the business impact survey of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa, conducted by Statistics South Africa in April 2020.

Exxaro, one of South Africa’s largest black-empowered resource companies, has announced a new supplier development partnership with internationally accredited University of Pretoria’s, Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). The two organisations are launching a new Contractor Development Programme. The programme aims to promote and support the advancement and empowerment of local Exxaro suppliers by providing business education and mentorship. Thus far, 31 businesses have been approved to enrol in the course, with the first intake running from November 2020 to November 2021. Exxaro Resources, at present a predominantly coal mining company, has started to diversify away from fossil fuels towards alternative resource opportunities. The company has a 20% stake in Kumba’s Sishen Iron Ore Company. It also has two wind farms in the Eastern Cape with a generation capacity of 239MWthrough its ownership of Cennergi, which owns and operates the Tsitsikamma Community and Amakhala Emoyeni wind farms. “Renewable energies will be a future growth area,” says Exxaro CEO Mxolisi Mgojo. “We have been very deliberate about how we diversify Exxaro’s portfolio towards cleaner energy resources.” In March, Exxaro published its climate change position statement, which includes its target to be carbon neutral by 2050. Exxaro Resources (“Exxaro”) acknowledges with great sadness the loss of life of a local community member of Lephalale. The deceased was part of a community protest that entered the private property owned by Exxaro near its Grootegeluk mine operations, which protestors set fire to a part of the veld and a conveyor belt leading out of the mine. The community member died on the scene after a fatal rubber bullet shot following an exchange with a private security company. We convey our sympathies to the family and community members on this unfortunate loss of life. We will be liaising with the family pending the police investigation.
